How does the "Einfach Mehrweg" reusable system work?

"Einfach Mehrweg" is an open, deposit-based reusable system in which every company with to-go products in the food retail and gastronomy sector can participate - regardless of its size. The shape and design of the various EINFACH MEHRWEG containers and cups allow for a flexible and diverse range of options, as well as the automatic return of the containers nationwide via reverse vending machines at one of the more than 5,000 acceptance points - including deposit clearing.

With its more than 3,700 stores in Germany, Rewe alone offers all customers a return option in their locality, regardless of where the reusable container was borrowed from there or another system partner.

The containers are cleaned by a professional industrial rinsing facility in order to achieve the necessary hygiene in terms of consumer protection. For the users, the handling is easy, because no app, no customer account and thus no registration and disclosure of personal data are necessary for lending a EINFACH MEHRWEG container or cup.

The Federal Environment Minister Steffi Lemke awarded the system the German government's "Blauer Engel" eco-label in June 2023. In addition, the reusable alternative for disposable packaging developed and introduced by Sykell has been awarded the "ECR Sustainability Award 2023" by GS1.
