Label Fraud? – Artificial Intelligence Ensures Correct Labeling

A mix-up of label rolls or print layouts in production is the horror of every food manufacturer. Visual inspection of the products is time-consuming and personnel-intensive and, despite the dual control principle, still involves the risk of numerical errors and careless mistakes. This can result in expensive complaints or even require a recall. To the annoyance of many producers, retail groups are increasingly not only returning incorrectly labeled packaging, but are also imposing conventional penalties on these deliveries. Particularly in the case of variable data or labels that are easy to confuse, this can lead to considerable financial burdens. Current developments in digital image processing and artificial intelligence are opening up new efficient and reliable ways of control.

How to use SAFE-IDENT Label

  • In the initial work step, the software is taught any desired number of products. In this process, the user can specify various variable or static data such as text, graphics, barcodes or data matrix codes.
  • For the verification process, the user places a printed product, a printed product package or a sheet of labels under the camera or on the scanner included with
  • SAFE-IDENT Label.
  • In the inspection process all kinds of labels, including outer packaging labels as well as printed data on a package or product, are recognized and all variable and static data are compared with the filed product details.
  • If the software registers an error, production is not released and the responsible employee is informed.

Features of SAFE-IDENT Label

  • SAFE-IDENT Label recognizes, among other things, data printed at an angle, data on irregular background, despite contamination, on glossy bags, on oval labels, and on inversely printed surfaces.
  • SAFE-IDENT Label evaluates the read data independent of content or language. If employees cannot distinguish similar languages (such as Polish and Czech) or fonts (such as Cyrillic or Greek) at first glance, the software identifies the corresponding language directly. Label also controls character-based fonts such as Chinese, Japanese, and many more.

Flatbed

Flatbed enables packaging materials and labels to be inspected on a flatbed scanner. Highly sensitive software monitors printed products in goods receipt or after printing for deviations from the original.

Professional

In the Professional version, a single-camera solution is integrated into a complete inspection station so that the entire labeled and printed products or packages (top and bottom) can be inspected offline in a single process. Thanks to its large field of view of 600 x 400 mm, Professional is suitable for packaging up to shipping carton size.

As an option, Professional is available with the VeriCube from REA Elektronik GmbH. The VeriCube checks the properties of codes according to ISO standards as well as plain text, graphic elements and variable data.     

Duplex

Like Professional, Duplex is supplied as a complete inspection station but is characterized by its compact design. Unlike Professional, Duplex uses two cameras to simultaneously inspect the top and bottom of a product and it can check the position and correct fit of the labels. Other features include complete shielding against extraneous light and outstanding properties for use with glossy and reflective packaging.           

Micro

Micro can detect the smallest details thanks to its resolution of 24 micrometers. The compact dimensions of the station make it easy to use even in confined spaces. Micro is the ideal solution for use in highly sensitive environments such as clean rooms, medical technology or the electrical industry.
